Understanding The US Patriot Act For Users
The US Patriot Act otherwise known as (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism) was passed on October 21, 2006. In this article, I want to talk about some of the facts that you need to know about this Act. Follow me as we are going to look at that together in this article.
TITLE II- Enhanced Surveillance Procedures, Section 216 of the Patriot Act, gives law enforcement agents access to dialogue, routing, and signalling information.
According to the ACT, the government can compel the Internet Service Provider to release the subscriber information that includes:
- Customer name
- Customer address
- Mode of payment
- Credit card information
- Bank account information
Also, Section 212 of the Act allows the ISPs to voluntarily disclose the customer information including the customer records and all electronic transmissions. ( email, voice transmission etc). The ISP may also choose to reveal the customer information if they believe there is a risk of death or bodily injury to an individual or group.
Above all, Section 220 of the ACT allows for a nationwide search warrant of emails which gives the authority the right to search a suspect without having to go to the Internet Service Provider.
